“U.S. Supreme Court questions both positions in Rio Grande water case”

On Wednesday, justices scrutinized the positions of both sides in a case that weighs issues of state sovereignty versus the federal government’s role in managing water in the Southwest. Attorneys for Texas and New Mexico came to the defense of a proposed deal allocating Rio Grande water between those two states, while the assistant to the U.S. solicitor general said the deal should be rejected because it violates the more far-reaching Rio Grande Compact water obligations.
