Renowned author Joseph M. Marshall III will be speaking on, “The History of an Indigenous Writer”. Come meet the author for the afternoon talk, one on one question and answer session and book signing. Refreshments will be served. Donations for the event are appreciated.
Joseph Marshall III is an educator, historian, Lakota craftsman and writer. He was born on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation in South Dakota and raised by his maternal grandparents. Being raised in a traditional native household, Joe’s first language is Lakota, and in that environment, he also learned the ancient tradition of storytelling. He is also a practitioner of primitive Lakota archery having learned from his maternal grandfather the art of hand-crafting bows and arrows and is also a specialist in wilderness survival.
Joseph has taught at the high school and university levels and has developed curriculum as well. He now writes full-time, having published fifteen nonfiction works, three novels, a collection of short stories and essays, two children’s books, a contributing author in five other publications and has written several screenplays.
In addition, Joseph has appeared in several television documentaries, served as technical advisor in movies and had a role in a major television network movie. In 2005 he was a technical advisor and narrator for the Turner Network Television and DreamWorks six part mini-series, Into the West, as well as playing the on-screen role of “Loved by the Buffalo.”
In 2000 Joseph became a Fellow in the Sundance Institute. He has traveled extensively across the United States as a speaker and lecturer and has also traveled to Sweden, France and Siberia. He has developed a leadership seminar based on the leadership lessons of Crazy Horse. In recent years, he was an adjunct instructor at SinteGleska University and Lower Brule Community College.
