For the past two months, U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson has refused to allow a House vote on a Senate bill that would extend the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) and expand compensation to nearly all Americans whose documented health struggles are linked to the nuclear weapons program, including New Mexican downwinders, who have never been eligible. As of yesterday, there were just seven working days left in Congress before RECA expires altogether, cutting off compensation and health screenings to ALL affected communities.
