Special Waldrum & Howe Display at RioBravoFineArt

Two local artists, one exhibit, a rare showing you won’t want to miss.

RioBravoFineArt will present a selection of work from two of its very important artists, H. Joe Waldrum and Delmas Howe, beginning Saturday, June 10, 2023. The gallery typically has only a very limited number of pieces by these two artists on display at any one time. This show will be an excellent representative sampling of the work by each of these two artists.

H Joe Waldrum

H. Joe Waldrum (1934-2003) was the founder of RioBravoFineArt. He is an important American abstract artist. After a highly successful career in Northern New Mexico in the 1980s and 1990s, Waldrum moved to Truth or Consequences, NM, in 1996 to provide a gallery for established and emerging artists in the region. The gallery represents a large collection of artworks (painting, print work, sketches, drawings, Polaroid SX-70 photographs) left by Waldrum at the time of his death.

Waldrum developed an artistic style shaped by the unique culture of Northern New Mexico but that speaks broadly. His art is represented by collections at the Palm Springs Art Museum (Palm Desert), the Museum of Art and Historic Block (Tucson), the Harwood Museum of Art (Taos), The Museum of New Mexico (Santa Fe), and the Albuquerque Museum. Waldrum has paintings at the Museum of Western Art, the Anschutz Collection, (Denver) and the Phillips Collection (Washington, D. C.).

Delmas Howe

Delmas Howe is a groundbreaking painter for the LGBTQ+ community; RioBravoFineArt is the sole representative of the work of Howe. This show will be a unique opportunity to see selected works (paintings) from various series – The Stations, Guys and Canyons, and Fresh Air. There will also be a showing of some of Howe’s superb lithographs, which are very rarely displayed at the gallery, but which represent superb artistry.

Currently there is a large-scale work on sale (on consignment by the current owner) of one of Howe’s most creative and audacious pieces – Ascension. This superb piece, a Southwestern scene done in the style of a classic Beaux Artes painting, is an exploration of the American West as the myth machine for the United States. The importance of Howe’s work and its significance is recognized internationally.
