Hundreds of dogs across at least five U.S. states—Colorado, Rhode Island, Oregon, New Hampshire and Massachusetts—have contracted a mysterious respiratory illness that does not appear to respond to antibiotics, leaving experts scrambling for understanding. Veterinarians say the disease usually starts with a cough that might last for weeks, then progresses to pneumonia and severe respiratory distress.
