I think the Atlantic piece is sensationalist and speculative. If there was a real multi country study specifically defining when a Democracy “starts to die” (does this apply to our own civil war?), how many democracies have actually recovered after “starting to die”, and the reasons for their recovery, such as per capita income, strong democratic traditions, existing checks and balances, education level of citizens…. It’s a long list. I’m not saying he’s wrong. I can’t see the future. But I don’t find it enlightening or useful. It’s an option piece and a personal narrative, plain and simple.
Sorry, I meant “opinion” piece, not “option”. And for all my criticism, he is preaching more or less to the choir. But the piece, at least for me, provides more heat than light.
