Although the Citizen is dedicated to local news and local politics, we do not think that should mean that our outlook is provincial. In fact, one of the greatest harms to local social and political life is to think that Sierra County is a whole world in itself. So, I thought it might interest the readers to read how events in America are seen from the bigger, outside world.
This time, I introduce you to Pearls and Irritations which describes itself as John Menadue’s Public Policy Journal. John Menadue was awarded the Order of Australia after serving as Secretary of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet (the most senior public servant in the Australian government), Secretary of the Department of Immigration and Ethnic Affairs, Secretary of the Department of Special Minister of State, and Secretary of the Department of Trade. He also was a business man who was general manager of Rupert Murdoch’s media conglomerate News Limited and the CEO of Quantas Airlines. He also founded the public interest think tank the Centre for Policy Development.
In Pearls and Irritations, Mr. Menadue publishes and republishes articles of interest to him on current issues in Australia and in the world. Here are links to some recent articles that may be of interest to those who want to see how American news is seen on the other side of the world. The first is Michael Taylor’s response to our President’s designation of anti-fascists as terrorists: https://johnmenadue.com/post/2025/09/i-am-antifa/. The second is Mohamed Ainullah’s article on an aspect of this year’s Nobel Prize that most American media missed: https://johnmenadue.com/post/2025/10/omar-yaghi-refugee-from-gaza-wins-2025-nobel-prize-in-chemistry/. The third is another take on another Nobel Prize winner, Marina Corinna Machado, by Eugene Doyle: https://johnmenadue.com/post/2025/10/nobel-peace-laureate-calls-for-u-s-bombing-of-her-country/. And the fourth is Ziyad Motala’s opinion piece on American media as a reflection of cultural habits of thought: https://johnmenadue.com/post/2025/10/van-jones-and-the-moral-vacancy-of-american-commentary-on-gaza/.

Thank you for sharing a link to my article, “I am ANTIFA” that was republished on Pearls and Irritations. I am thrilled that you have introduced it to your readers.
It is part of a trilogy I have written on the subject, each with a different angle:
