Diana Tittle, a member of the board of Sierra County Public-Interest Journalism Project, was the editor of the Sierra County Sun, the Citizen's precursor. A former resident of Truth or Consequences who now lives part-time in northern New Mexico, she spent her 42-year professional career in Cleveland, Ohio, where she worked as a newspaper reporter, magazine writer and editor, book author and publisher and publishing consultant. I just talked to a lady who has a business downtown and has along with her husband bought a big older house on Riverside near the park. She is bought completely into the dream that the private investment corporation that has bought 40 properties in town will stimulate unbelievable growth in TorC with profits for all savvy investors in real estate. Of course she was unaware of the tax benefits enjoyed through forgiveness of some capital gains (Tom Sharp’s excellent article in this online paper) and the fact that the man who spearheaded these purchases has out of state investors who will most likely receive most of any profits, not our community. The devil is in the details and many of these free market worshipers have no understanding of them, but are ripe for exploitation by those who do.
