“New Mexico battles to clamp down on big oil”

New bills prefiled in the New Mexico House in advance of the legislative session now underway could curb industry excesses by limiting the use of fresh water in oil and natural gas operations; impose mandatory fines for toxic spills; create child health protection zones near schools; and provide small budgetary increases for enforcement agencies. These proposed changes follow last year’s shutout of bills aimed at reforming the way the fossil fuel business is conducted in New Mexico, a Top 10 producer of oil and gas.
