High temperatures, lack of rainfall and inability to store adequate supplemental water have contributed to the onset of a dryer-than-usual season throughout the Middle Rio Grande. The Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District’s San Juan-Chama Project water has now been depleted, and the natural flow of the Rio Grande is well below what is needed to meet the ongoing irrigation demand of non-Pueblo lands.

“Game Commission discusses bear and cougar hunting rule”
by Hannah Grover, NM Political Report
August 27, 2023

Surveys have found that less than one third of Americans approve of trophy hunting, which may explain the public call to lower harvest limits on these apex predators that has emerged during New Mexico’s quadrennial review of bear and cougar hunting regulations. 1. Being an old hunter I’ve been exposed to the anti hunters for a long time and little changes. Their arguments are based primarily on feelings, not science. I’d bet the majority of them would look at the subject a little different if their food supply or lively hood depended on the animals the bears and cougars are killing. The document in the last issue had a recommendation of reducing the estimated number of cougars by 30%. What is the basis for that number? I expect Game and Fish has a pretty good idea how many animals are out there. If you really want to know, ask the folks that chase them. I ran into a lion hunter a few years ago and asked him about the population. His reply was that he use to have to hunt pretty hard to get a cat for his hunters. But now there are enough that he can let the females and small ones go and get old toms for all his clients. What does that tell you?!!!
