Increasingly complex oil and gas wells now require astonishing volumes of water to fracture the bedrock and release fossil fuels, threatening America’s fragile aquifers. The story specifically focuses on Texas, Colorado and New Mexico, where last May a coalition of tribes and environmental organizations sued the state, alleging that it had failed to protect its residents from the harms of fracking.
