“Canada-based company eyes southwest New Mexico for lithium production”

The company, Lancaster Resources, has submitted applications to the New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management for a permit to drill three exploratory wells in the Alkali Flats playa near Lordsburg. Extraction of lithium, a key component in batteries needed for energy storage and electric vehicles, is a water-intensive process and produces carbon dioxide emissions. Lancaster says it will use mining methodologies that are environmentally conscious.
