“Anti-abortion ordinances tested today at N.M. Supreme Court”

The state’s highest court heard arguments today in a constitutional challenge brought by New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez to abortion regulations enacted or considered by six local governments. In addition to asking the court to strike down the ordinances passed in Clovis, Hobbs, Lea and Roosevelt Counties, the Torrez filing has petitioned the justices to determine that the personal decision to terminate a pregnancy is protected under the state constitution.

“Asha the wolf captured near Coyote”

Asha, officially known as member F-2754 of New Mexico’s endangered Mexican gray wolf population, has been captured once again by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officials concerned about her safety and well-being. Thus ends Asha’s second venture out of the federally designated recovery area south of I-40 and into northern New Mexico—wanderings that enchanted schoolchildren across the state and cheered biodiversity advocates eager to learn more about the population’s behavior in the wild.
