The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued Holtec International a license on Tuesday that will allow the company to construct and operate a facility in southeast New Mexico that will temporarily store nuclear waste from power plants across the country. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and Attorney General Raúl Torrez vowed in a joint statement to “take any action necessary to make sure that ground is never broken on this ‘interim’ facility, ” joining a chorus of other New Mexico officials and environmental activists in immediately opposing the license.

In a May 9 earnings call, company executives said they were on track to perform the first spaceflight in nearly two years by its SpaceShipTwo suborbital vehicle, VSS Unity, in late May from Spaceport America in New Mexico. That flight, designated Unity 25, is intended to be a final test before beginning commercial flights.
