New interpretive signs at Damsite

According to Damsite personnel many folks coming to the Visitor Center have been asking about the empty three-sided kiosks that have been put up around the historic district. Well the wait is over. These kiosks have maps, information and historic insights to three different areas. The Damsite Historic District, The Elephant Butte Dam overlook and the Fish Hatchery Campground.

Details on the history of the dam are accompanied with archival photos.

Most of the panels are in place or will be in the next few days. Please stop by and check them out, lots of cool photos and information. And the Welcome Center has more information — including artifacts and first-hand through on-site historian Will Dooley.

The new signage also contains information on the changing lake levels.

Damsite Historic District is located about five miles east of Truth or Consequences. Take Highway 51 (Third Street) east. Near the top of the dam turn left on Highway 177 to the overlook. After the overlook the road continues on for about another mile to the turnoff spur (left) to the Welcome Center. The Welcome Center is open every day from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The majority of the content for this story including photos comes from Damsite Historic District.
